Araluen Collection New Acquisitions
April - June 2023
Sitzler Gallery
This exhibition showcases a number of significant recent acquisitions made by the Araluen Arts Centres for its permanent collection. Highlights include John’s Olsen’s Lake Eyre - the Edge donated by the artist from his personal collection in 2022, in addition a number of important watercolours from the Hermannsburg School bequeathed by Helene Katherine Frieda Burns (daughter to Pastor Friedrich Wilhelm Albrecht) and Dudley Max Burns. Amongst this donation is Albert Namatjira’s impressively detailed Amphitheatre, Palm Valley 1943 which has never previously been exhibited. Also featured is the last painting completed by celebrated Spinifex artist Kunmanara (Fred) Grant and Scission II, painted on heavy weight paper, by Peter Adsett which was exhibited and acquired from the artist’s solo exhibition staged recently at Araluen. This exhibition is a wonderful snapshot of recent acquisitions for the Araluen Art Collection and demonstrates its legacy of supporting and celebrating artists living and working across Central Australia as well as artists who travel to this region and respond to it through their practice.
