On the Road (2025)

Thriller

Set against the dusty highways and isolated truck stops of northern Mexico, On the Road is a raw, sensual and suspenseful drama about desire, survival and an unexpected connection between two men.

Veneno is a rebellious young drifter who moves from roadside diner to roadside diner, making a living through casual encounters with truck drivers and whatever other opportunities come his way. Restless and accustomed to relying on himself, he exists on the margins of a world defined by loneliness, danger and fleeting connections.

His life takes an unexpected turn when he meets Muñeco, a reserved and hard-edged long-haul truck driver. Initially wary of one another, the two form an arrangement that sees Veneno join Muñeco on his freight runs through the vast and unforgiving landscapes of northern Mexico. Together, they enter the rough, hyper-masculine world of long-haul trucking, where isolated roads, roadside cantinas and truck stops become the backdrop to their increasingly intimate relationship.

What begins as a practical, transactional relationship gradually develops into something more complicated. Away from the expectations and constraints of everyday life, Veneno and Muñeco discover an unexpected tenderness and attraction. Their time together offers both men a rare sense of companionship, while the long stretches of road create a space where they can reveal sides of themselves that remain hidden from the outside world.

But the freedom of the road comes at a price. Veneno's troubled past refuses to stay behind, and as old connections and unresolved dangers begin to catch up with him, the fragile bond between the two men is placed under increasing pressure. Their journey becomes entangled with a dangerous world of drugs, violence and criminal activity, turning their growing romance into a fight for survival.

As the tension builds, On the Road shifts seamlessly between erotic romance, character drama and thriller. David Pablos captures the harsh beauty of Mexico's northern highways while exploring the vulnerability hidden beneath performances of masculinity. At its heart, the film is a story about two outsiders who find each other in an unexpected place, and the possibility of tenderness in a world where intimacy can be both liberating and dangerous.

Winner of the Queer Lion and Orizzonti Award for Best Film at the 2025 Venice Film Festival, On the Road is an intense and emotionally charged portrait of desire, masculinity, danger and the fleeting freedom of life on the open road.
