Living
1953. A London shattered by WWII is still recovering. Veteran civil servant in the county Public Works department (played by Bill Nighy) receives a medical diagnosis that inspires him to move to the south coast and cram some fun into his remaining days. He meets a sunny young female colleague who seems to have the pep that had previously escaped him.
Directed by Oliver Hermanus, Living is a screenplay adaption of the 1952 Akira Kurosawa directed Japanese film Ikiru, which in turn was inspired by the 1886 Russian novella The Death of Ivan Ilyich by Leo Tolstoy. Living has been nominated for Best Actor (for Nighy) and Best Adapted Screenplay in this year’s Academy Awards.
