Songs Inside | Documentary + Q&A
‘Songs Inside’ is a feature-length documentary that follows the transformative journey of a group of women in the Adelaide Women’s Prison who, over six months, discover the healing power of music. Led by Barkindji singer-songwriter Nancy Bates, the creative process unearths the women's profound struggles with trauma and addiction while also reigniting their dreams and hopes for a different future. Their journey culminates in a concert with the Adelaide Symphony Orchestra—the largest ever held in an Australian prison.
The screening features a Q&A with the filmmakers and a participant from the film.
Presented in partnership with the 18th Reintegration Puzzle Conference.
“In 2023 I was granted unprecedented access to film in all areas of the Adelaide Women’s Prison, allowing me to immerse myself in the prison environment and develop intense, meaningful and trusting relationships with the women in the music group. The result is a compassionate but shockingly honest portrait of incarcerated women today and the transformative power that music can have on their futures.”
